Hi all. It's amazing the kind of activity toward a Utopia that we created just by saying how much we love ours. Wow. The power of the written word. We are please that you all love it, too. Now, onto roasting. Can you tell us what the cracks mean as far as the kind of roast per crack. For example, would first crack be a city roast? Or full city? What about second crack? We plan to get a Hearthware Precision roaster. Is that a good plan? We found it for $110 with free shipping online. Is that a good price? Thanks for your responses in advance. We are diggin' the conversations on this listserv. PS: Why do we get most of the postings more than once? Lani and Bob PPS: Anybody in Philly? |

Is that a good price? For $121 you can buy the same roaster with 4 extra pounds of coffee from the people who sponsor this forum. This is the same place that has probably the best selection of high quality on the Internet. Sweetmarias.com will provide excellent service and prices. Terry F |
A good book is Kenneth Davids book on home roasting. Pg 69 give you tables/temps expected at the different roast stages. Not exact but a ROT (Rule of Thumb). 1st Crack is City 2nd Crack is Full city+ 3rd crack is Starbucks trademark :=) Glenn Lanisvoice wrote: <Snip> homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |

If you head that direction -- check Sweet Marias site; there are hints there that are beyond the manual that others have pointed me to as a great hint for prolonging the life. I had no other experience until I got the HWP -- that, along with the info on Sweet Marias and Kenneth Davis' book, got us going. Major change in what we considered "good coffee." From recent discussions with people, I would probably go with the Hearthware Gourmet if I had a chance to do it over again -- I understand that there are some modifications to better monitor temperature that Tom can ( or will ? ) do for you. From my research -- it is a simpler roaster that requires a bit more monitoring; but there is better reliability. homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |
