Back in 1911 Marcel Duchamp made a "found object" painting of a coffee mill. His purpose was to try to get people to look for the art in everyday objects. The painting has two views of the conical burs, one from the top showing the crank connecting to the center bur complete with arrows showing the direction of rotation and the other showing them in position in a cut-away view of the workings of the mill. The painting in in the Tate Gallery and a small version of it can be seen at: http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/AWork?id691Given the detail on the burs, I think the subject of this painting could have been a Zassenhaus, but we will probably never know. Merging art and function is quite common in coffee items. I find few items produced as art as aesthetically pleasing to experience as some of the nicer vacuum pots and hand operated espresso machines. In fact, I don't like much art more than an average vacuum pot. Then, there is the pleasure of the coffee. This hobby really improves the quality of life.
