I have a product wish; that is, I’d like a product for which I would gladly pay fair
value if only it existed. If it does exist, please let me know, and if not- - -Tom,
are you listening?
I’d like to receive say, 5, 2oz samples of roasted coffee once a month, each
accompanied by the roaster’s professional cupper’s review. I'd be willing to sign up
for a year. In this way, I could begin some at-home cupper’s training by reading
the reviews and “looking for” the characteristics described; then I could build up
to blind, side-by-side comparisons with the opportunity to check or confirm my
judgments.
Yes, we can order a pound of roasted coffee from Tom. Then, it’s a simple enough
matter to match up his review with our own brewed cup or pulled shot. But there are
disadvantages. Chiefly, it takes quite some time to work through a pound, which
eliminates side-by-side comparisons. Also, this is not so much about identifying
optimal roasts for a particular coffee, but training to recognize and compare
elements otherwise missed.
I can roast my own small batches for comparison, but that adds variables that
diminish the value of the trials.
Since I already rely on Tom’s reviews, I’d like to calibrate my own taste
sensibilities to his (even if I don’t always agree with his taste preferences). On
the other hand, I’d “settle” for someone else taking on the project if I had some
validation of her or his consistent cupping expertise.
The roaster/cupper could select groupings of test coffees that would be most
instructive. Could such a product/service be useful to you? Profitable to the
roaster/reviewer? How many would have to sign up, and what would the charge have to
be?

It sounds like a great idea, second only to being able to do
it in person. Also a great thing to do with a couple of friends. I'm
in if it happens.
