Topic: small vac brewer (11 msgs / 181 lines)

Is there a such thing as a vacuum brewer for those of us that only brew one or two cups of coffee at a time?
Thx,
Edward

Yes. But of course that depends on your definition of what a "cup" is. As
an example:
Cona size "C". 1.5 pints.
Hario Nouveau 12 fl oz

There was some discussion on that very subject in the 'travelling to Japan'
thread that's current on this list.
You can look up the list archives here:
http://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/private/homeroast/Seems that Hario and Kona make small ones but that not available here.
Tom used to carry some Hario but it was not worth his while.
You will need to get Ben to bring you one back...

Cory once made a 2 cup vac pot. I've seen them on Ebay. I'll send you a
picture of one if you wish. - Steve D.

There's the Tayli, but it doesn't seem to be available on this side of
the Big Ocean. It wouldn't be surprising if there are other Japanese
ones as well.

yours for smallness,

I use the Yama. I live alone and in the morning I grind three of the Yama
spoon measures and fill the bottem to just above the 3 cup line with just
under boiling water. When it fills, I stir the grounds and let it heat for
4 minutes. Out of that I get a mug and a half of great coffee. It's the
perfect size for this "small" household.

"ben" had a very short trip. I was in the air for ~ 48 hrs, and on the
ground for even less.

The iced coffee from the machine at A&D was drinkable, some of the other
was absolutely awful.

not really, but then I was had about 30 minutes in the SOGO (dept store)
only.

I have 10oz mugs at my house, which I think are pretty standard size
mugs. They're the Pottery Barn white cermic deals, so I'm guessing
they're normal. I got a Hario 'Neuveo 5 cup' vac brewer (spelling wrong,
but..) about a month or so ago and I can't say enough about it. It
really brings out something in my coffee that I've been missing, I
think. I was a hardcore Press Pot guy before that, using my Santos on
occasion when I had guests over.. Sinply because I have the smallest
Bodum Press they make.. I drink usually only one cup a day. The Hario
has markings for 3 cups and 5 cups on the side, and I find the 3 cup
marking is a perfect 1 mug full. I would consider this a beautiful one
cup brewer. It will make more, obviously, but I think the alcohol lamp
is sort of overwhealmed by the full capacity. I do a pre-boil on the
stove and put the hot water in the Hario and then fire the lamp.. So
it's not like I'm heating the whole ammount with jjust the alcohol lamp.
You'll need all morning to do that! ;-) I hear the Hario Technica 5 cup
is even nicer, since it does wthout the wick in the alcohol lamp.. But
I've never used one of these.
I think the Tayli 1 cup machine would not make enough coffee for one of
my mugs, but I still drool over it when I see it in pictures. I *so*
want one anyway, if only just to stare at. I wish I could get one here..

Mike,
You might want to try the butane lamp..I believe you can get it at Lee
Valley. Not sure of the exact site, but you can Google it. It's a woodcraft
place...
Ciao,
Angelo
