Topic: Popper Lubricant? (2 msgs / 47 lines)
1) From: David Iverson
Hi Roasters,
I scored a Popcorn Pumper at the local Goodwill store
yesterday. Seems to work OK, but it's extraordinarily
loud compared to a similar popper. Seems to vibrate
more too. I was thinking a bit of lubricant on the
fan might help out, and also might be a good
maintenance idea for all those hard working poppers
out there.
Any suggestions for lubricating a popper fan? I've
seen talk of Loctite high temperature food grade
lubricant and graphite for other roasting
applications. Powdered graphite is easy to come by,
but I'd be afraid it would blow out the top into the
roast chamber. Is there something less exotic than
the Loctite? I'd guess the fan area doesn't get too
hot, so 700-900 degs. F rated lubricant is probably
overkill.
Thanks,
  Dave I.

Avoid grease, motor bushings need a light oil. I use 10w30 motor oil. Use
only one drop to wet the exposed end of the shaft and bushing, let soak for
a minute then wipe off any excess. The fan side bushing is not easily
accessible so leave it alone.
Your loud popcorn pumper may have a warped fan. You should completely
disassemble it anyway to check and clean it.
