Just in passing, though, I was wondering... About ten years ago, the now defunct Coffee Connection (a Boston area roaster) used to sell CRLM peaberry - and that seemed to be a definite notch above the standard issue CRLM. Is the La Minita estate still sorting out peaberries? If so, Tom, is it possible you could order some? Has anyone else had the CRLM peaberry? If so, do you have the fond memories of it that I do? No chance on the Peaberry. I have looked into it before but there is one
roaster with exclusive claim to the LM Peaberry ...in fact I believe it is
Caribou (I know this was discussed here and someone on the list knows for
sure). I can say this: the La Minita is very very good this year. I am wary
of its high price so I essentially "re-audition" it each year in bling
cupping, and it really blew away 8 other tarrazu in the lineup. The
disappointment is that La Pastora Tarrazu, that was very good last year, is
not good this year, so we opted out of our contract on it. We cupped a
really bizarre tarrazu too: Fruta Del Oro. It was incredibly bright but the
acidity was salty!?! Salty is not a bad taste, DP brazils are salty ... but
not in a CR Tarrazu! Needless to say, we passed.

<Snip> It is Caribou that has bought it all (and is charging $14 a pound for it!) -- Chris Schmelzer Webmaster, Coffee Cafes mailto:chris homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |
Glad to hear the La Minita is good this year, but did it outcup the Dota? Last year's crop didn't taste nearly as good to me as the Dota from last year. (And, parenthetically, will there be any Dota any time soon?) The only time I had salty coffee was when some fool let seawater get into the fresh water tank and I didn't find out until I had made coffee and tried to drink it. At least it was reasonably clean seawater from 80 miles offshore, but I still wouldn't recommend it as a coffee flavoring.... |
For anyone interested, the Dota is as good as last year and that was very good indeed. While the 20 lb bag I bought probably did no damage to Tom's supply, it should last me until next year's crop.... On the other hand, I didn't think that the new Organic Uganda has as much depth as the Mbale that was available before, but other than that, it is still one of my top five favorites in my current collection. The two of them brewed together results in a very good cup. |
