Kevin,
Put $20 aside, and bid for an old hand-crank mill on ebay... figure
$10 for shipping and $10 max for the mill... Consider using a free
trial of "auctionsniper.com" and set the limit at $10... You'll end
up spending $20 is all, and you'll get a much more consistent grind.
It's how I got my Zassenhaus 499.
I have 7 kids too... I Understand!
Here's a few current examples worth every penny
(meaning it will be decent for $10)...
ANTIQUE COFFEE GRINDER DUTCH COULAUX MOLSHEIM

VINTAGE GERMAN ZASSENHAUS COFFEE GRINDER
Item number: 6131475619
VINTAGE KYM MOKKA COFFEE/PEPPER GRINDER MILL

Best regards...

I know you say you know to get a burr grinder, so I know you are hearing, just not listening. Your machine is probably fine. It is the dust created by your blade that is the culprit most likely. I understand budgets, so I won't say just do it. Just don't try and fix a machine that is not broken. To be sure, go buy some whole beans and espresso grind them at the store. See if those work in your machine. Then at least you will know.
