Topic: Decaf Headache Question (12 msgs / 215 lines)
1) From: Gene Smith
Just out of curiosity, has anyone experienced any unpleasant effects from
decaf? I am specifically asking about headaches. I know that any
information will, of necessity, be anecdotal, but I'd really like to know
if anyone has had headaches they even suspected were caused by decaf.
Thanks for any clues.

My wife does and can't figure out why. The type of decaf process
doesn't seem to matter.

Caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches, although, that's not exactly
the same as decaf causing them.

Gene, if you mean headaches caused directly from
decaf, I've never experienced that. I have, however,
had headaches caused by caffein withdrawal, sometimes
when I drank decaf rather than non-decaf.

Only if I'm currently addicted to caffeine, which physical addiction, for
me, will come and go. Now the psychological/social/emotional addicition
stays. Gotta have my shot/press/ibrik/vac/even drip coffee daily!

Addicted?! I was walking home from work last night and overheard some
guy talking to a woman about his coffee habit. At one point he said,
"to tell th truth, I just drink decaf." My girlfriend and I started
laughing because my backpack had 14 lbs of green beans in it just
delivered from SMs. We had a couple of blocks of laughs out of that
little incident. I'm addicted, and will gladly admit that.
Gene- On topic: I have in the past suffered from withdrawl headaches,
but nothing directly related to decafs. I am drinking more decaf in
the evenings with dinner instead of a cocktail or glass of wine
(alcohol tends to give me migraines). I do know it's possible for
people to be sensitive to different chemicals in different ways.
Perhaps something in the decaf process alters the chemical composition
in a way such that your wife's reacting to it.

Gene,
I drink both caf and decaf and blends of them. I've never experienced
any problems with decaf. I have had headaches from quitting caf
cold-turkey or from drinking too much caf. But everyone's different and
there just may be people who have a bad reaction to decaf.

My wife has been drinking some decaf the last three days and has some
terrible headaches the last two days...
I will ask her to stop the decaf and see if this changes anything...
Obviously this is anecdotal at best, but there may be some link...

That's the first thing I thought, except I guess it is sorta obvious.
Frankly, there's the sense with decaf that you should be getting
caffeine but you aren't ... and also the way that coffee can trigger
stomach acids because it has moderate amounts of oils and fats, but
there's nothing there to truly digest (which is why people sometimes
think coffee causes them stomach pains, when it is really the fact
they don't eat before the coffee, or with the coffee. It's also why I
think some people use a lot of cream in coffee). Anyway, that's all I
can think of.

Before finding sweetmarias I used to get head aches from decaf all the
time. I a confident that it was a reaction to something in the decaf
coffee and not a withdrawal. I experimented for a long time and came
to the conclusion it must have something to do with the processing.
But maybe not. When I started home roasting the decaf from
sweetmarias I have not had a head ache since. On a side note. I used
to be able to only drink about 6 ounces of coffee at a time and only
with food before home roasting this good quality coffee. Part of my
passion for sweetmarias is that I have always loved coffee but can now
drink it without a stomach ache and a head ache from decaf.

Hi Gene,
I have a friend who definitely will not drink any kind of decaf, even
mine which is very good, because she gets very bad headaches.
Not a problem with caffeine withdrawal, but something in the processing
causes it.
Hope this helps,
PeterZ
