First a brief introduction since I haven't posted to the list in a long while! I ordered from Tom years ago (was he in Ohio??) and got a Poppery II. Shortly after that I had some health problems and had to give up coffee, then eventually started having decaf and now usually do a half-caffe mix. Over the last couple of years, I have started roasting again, but mainly for drip or presspot. I still use the poppery and sometimes the heat gun/wok combo. I have a blade grinder and a zass. Last night I opened a Rocky and a Silvia!!!!! I'm sure I'll have questions about them later after I experiment a bit. I want to order some beans, but the list sure has expanded since last time I visited Tom's site. Do any of the decafs work well for espresso? I wish there was a decaf sampler pack, but I didn't notice that option, so I think I'll order some Donkey blend and a couple of others. Anyone have suggestions? I'll also be picking 2-3 non-decafs for my husband, so if you want to recommend anything for him, that'd be great too. We generally like sumatras/indonesians, but have an organic Mexican Altura that we've liked pretty well too. I'm wondering if it would be at all similar to the Mexico Esmeralda. Angela p.s. Sorry for the long post. My next one will be shorter. :) |
I believe you can get decaf sampler packs. Just ask when you place your order. On 12/25/05, Spectrum wrote: <Snip> t <Snip> f <Snip> , <Snip> o <Snip> -- "Life is just one damned thing after another." - Elbert Hubbard |

Sorry for the long post. My next one will be shorter. :) Hi Angela, Congrats on your Silvia/Rocky. You'll get too much advice here on how to use them. Let me be the first to overdo it. Start with the donkey for perfecting your espresso technique. There are enough variables involved - it would help to rule out coffee type and freshness in the mix. I have bought decaf samplers in the past and expect you can order one now. Even if not a specific line item on the order form, just write ii in the comments box. My latest decaf enjoyment has been Tom's Sumatra taken to a Vienna plus (can't bring myself to use the "F" word to describe the roast) at my wife's request for a dark roast like we used to drink. It was surprisingly rich and flavorful and I will roast it again at that level, even if she doesn't ask. I also enjoy the Sulawesi and the Tanzania, the Komodo less so than these. But basically, let your preferences do your selecting for you. Tom's notes should give you an idea of what to expect. Haven't tried the Mexican so I look forward to your report on it. Happy holidays. And please don't shorten your future posts! MichaelB |

Donkey, of course. Brazil Mogiana WP decaf makes a nice s.o. or base for espresso. You can add 2 parts Sulawesi Toraja WP and 1 part Ethiopia Sidamo WP to 3 or 4 parts of the Brazil. Brazil should be no darker than City+ (tricky with decaf but doable) to keep it from getting ashy. Sulawesi can be up to FC+ and the Sidamo City+ or FC. <Snip> There is. Hi. I just want to add my $0.02 to the mix. I primarily drink decaf, and while I fluctuate in favorites, the Mexican Esmerelda, Guatamalan Huehuetenango, and Ethiopian Sidamo are always near the top. For espresso, the Donkey blend is excellent, I like the komodo blend a lot, Monsooned Malabar (when Tom has a decaf), and the sulawesi toraja made a very interesting shot. For my espresso roasting I usually take the beans 15seconds after the first snaps of second crack. I tried Donkey at Full City (on the verge of second crack) but didn't care for it that much. I hope this helps, french Yahoo! DSL – Something to write home about. Just $16.99/mo. or less. dsl.yahoo.com |
