I know ... I just try to ignore it and hope it passes. Frankly, when people
get on eachother a bit here, I always put it in context of the internet
newsgroup and chat room hideousness. And compared to those scathing forums,
this is nothing!
Anyway, stop the namecalling ya'll, keep the topic on coffee, if its
personal then send a personal email, yadda yadda, be nice .. you have heard
it all before...
I hear people say we get a bit off topic here, but I have to admit that if
we were on topic 100% of the time it would get very monotonous. References
to home brewing, campfires, scotch and Bokar are alright with me, and I
think the list goes along pretty well for most of you (?)
In fact that thread on commercial roasting had some great opinions about
the varied reasons that we all roast our own, all very convincing
arguments...

Haven't been on this list too long here, so I'm wondering if things
typically get out of hand like this? I guess I don't understand why =
someone
is getting flamed for suggesting that we stay on topic. After wading
through 92 emails yesterday on one off-topic thread, I can see where =
they
coming from.
I love the off topic posts here - it's what makes this list unique. I =
guess
it was the volume of the messages, and the tone they started to take, =
that
put me off.

I've been on this list for several years, and it *rarely* gets like
this. Frankly - if you've something nasty to say, take it off list. We
don't want any trolls here. Let's get back to coffee and leave this crap
behind is now please.

Gregg-
Controlling any group is like herding cats; T'ain't
gonna happen. This episode is pretty unusual in my
opinion. I think a lot of people here like Ginny, who
is a regular, and we jumped to her defense when some
lurker came in with the "take your drug talk
elsewhere" post. To many people here, talking about
what is going on *is* on-topic, and the heavy-handed
and tactless way in which the newbie attempted to
institute his own version of list discipline (not
Tom's, mind you) annoyed a bunch of us.
Yeah, this is a great resource for coffee. It's also
a wonderful group of people (only one of whom I've
actually met) who want to chew the fat from time to
time. So long as you aren't telling people about
competitors, it's pretty much on-topic.
Cheers;
Craig

I'm with you on this Gregg - I love the off topics. I could just delete
the stuff I'm not interested IF PEOPLE WOULD CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE
:O) I started a thread and was compelled to read about 20 non-related
posts with the same subject. However, truth be known, I enjoy reading
100% of the posts and would even if all of them had the same subject
line.

Things aren't out of hand. There is just a lot of people that want Ginny to know they are there for her. She is fortunate to have so many people thinking about her. I hope everyone has that kind of support in their time of need. Use your delete button for topics you don't want to wade through. Sue

If you check the Subject and don't like a topic, hit your delete button. I do that with almost all I-roast discussions. I don't ever plan on owning one. If I change my mind, I will hit the archives!

So let me get this straight, isn't this comment the same as ?

"the newbie attempted to

I intend to drop this now as it is OT.

I might add that Ginny has earned the affection that many of us in this
group have for her. She has been generous with tradition items,
she has been ready to welcome new comers to the list, and she has been
willing to help everyone, and not only about coffee.
For example, a while back she suffered a rather serious dog bite
because she tried to break up a dog fight. At about
that time we got another dog and one of our older dogs was being rather
grumpy about the intruder on her turf. Tori, my
six-year-old granddaughter was trying to play peacemaker between the
growling dogs. When I let Ginny know that Tori
was trying to follow in her footsteps, she sent Tori an email
explaining how foolish she had been to try to break up the
dog fight. Tori had refused to listen to her parents or grandparents,
she did listen to Ginny. When Mr What's His Name
came in to play Mr Policeman and mischaracterized our concern for
Ginny as "drug talk" , he caught some flack. He deserved it.

Agreed Mike - no reason for nastiness... There's nothing wrong with
people taking off-topic posts off the list. You can reply directly to
whomever you want, just cut and paste. We are getting a huge volume
of mail and that's a problem. There's a lot of "I agree" and "me too"
posts that aren't adding to a topic. It's uncomfortable for me to
make suggestions as to how the list should go ... but I guess that is
my job as Admin. There's no need to snap at someone who asks that the
list stay on coffee topics. We are going to have off topic threads
but if we can keep them to a minimum and not have EVERYONE reply to
them, then the bulk of the list mail is on topic.
I do feel I have a special reason to make these polite requests ---
since a lot of people are on vacation and their inbox is going to be
overfilled with homeroast email, it is Maria and I that have to
respond to the complaints.
Tom
