This is a "new" unused 1940's era electric vacuum brewer. Worth a moment to look at, even if you can't or won't buy it. I want it, but can't really justify anymore "clutter" in my life. sigh.http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Silex-1940s-Bakelite-Vacuum-Coffee-Maker-MINT_W0QQitemZ6250740386QQcategoryZ11652QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |
Thats a really nice looking vac pot. Darn purty I tell ya. I'm curious if anyone else on the list knows anything about them. Chuck do I really need another way to make coffee? Randolph Wilson wrote: <Snip> |
Specifically it is a narrow-mouth Silex Vacuum Brewer. It's like every other Silex or Cory out there. The electric heater element is a "burner", meaning you heat the pot on it. But you could also use the pot on a regular stove as well (be careful with setting a glass pot directly on an electric burner - there are wire thingies or copper plates which will allow better heat distribution." VacPots make incredible coffee. The challenge with this one is choosing to "un-mint" the thing by using it, versus holding it and never tasting thew incredible coffee a vac-pot makes. And, as usual, I would use my Zass... When I looked it had become a $180... coffee pot. I think my folks had a glass Vaculator- although the Silex name rings a bell. It had no heater base, just heated on an asbestos pad on the gas stove. The serpentine nichrome heater sure looks familiar. I liked to crunch a bean in my mouth. How's that for extraction? The wall grinder had a blue windmill on it, and I liked the feel of the beans cracking in the burrs. I was the defacto coffee maker around home, but the brew everybody else liked was just very hot and weak to my palate. I liked the smell of it but never drank any. Cheers -RayO, aka Opa! The final price was over $200 bucks. I have one just like it, but it has been used. I use mine for special occasions. I bought mine at an antique store for less than $30.00. I think I am going to dedicate my Silex for brewing the first pot of each Cup of Excellence coffees I add to my stash. I was not even tempted as I know the value would head south as soon as someone brewed a pot of coffee in it. To me something like this should be enjoyed by using it.
