I usually can't see my own posts in GMail untill someone else has
added to the thread.  Could this be the problem?

That's the problem. This one came through, but only when there was a

I save a message that I sent, but it's gets deleted if someone replies
to it weeks later and I don't archive. I don't want everything
archived as I like to find what I need.  The "other options" option is
closed by default, so can't easily save just one message. The help
forums don't seem to answer any of my questions. I love the setup of
the posts, but there are many things that make my life hard.
