Hi All, I'm new to the list. I've been roasting in a Poppery-compatible Toastmaster for two years because it's fun, easy, cheap, and I like fresh-roasted coffee. I'm miles from being anywhere as discriminating as Tom or folks on the list--I'll drink anyone's coffee if the pot's fresh, and I'll usually like it, though I generally like mine better. My ability to discern flavors is basically "like it," "don't like it," and "it's okay." (In fact, I still have some of the "ugh-the coffee" I got with my first order from SM--I couldn't bear to throw it away because for me it fell into the "it's okay" category and I figured I could use it in a pinch.) That said, in my two years of roasting there was one coffee where I felt I could discriminate the flavors Tom described in his review. It was my first home roast and, I think, still the best. (Or was the jolt from store-bought to home-roasted just so great that it just seems the best?) Anyway, it was two years ago--a Costa Rican, Sweet Maria's special selection (or something like that), I think it was a peaberry, and Tom described it has having flavors of cinammon and cardamom. And I actually tasted those flavors! It was really exceptional. Anyone remember it? Is there anything comparable on SM's list currently? Thanks, Dan |
