Topic: Espresso Monkey Blend For Ice Coffee (3 msgs / 50 lines)
1) From: Steve Pretti
I just brewed some EMB for ice coffee. I used my Silex vacuum pot, and
dissolved sugar in it while it was hot. Poured some over ice in a glass - it
was the best ice coffee I ever had. Tom - this is one versatile blend.

Monsooned Malabar makes a mean iced coffee too. I tried a lighter roast of
the stuff, brewed it real strong (lots of grinds, same grind), and poured it
over ice after brewing. Had a kick that made you cough a bit after drinking
it. Damn good. Some coffees take well to ice, others don’t. Any
suggestions? Tis the season for iced coffee, after all.
Oh, and I remember an earlier series of posts about preferred icing methods.
I used to work at a coffeehouse and I’d always pour the brewed coffee over a
glass packed with ice. There wasn’t a significant loss in flavor from the
melting, and the results were always great. One day, I started my shift and
brewed some coffee, then set it to cool in the basement walk-in. The
results later that day were miserable. The flavor was FLAT. I think the
slow cooling did it in. What do the rest of my fellow Canadian-speakers
think?

My favorite ice coffee are the REALLY bright ones ...like the Costa Rican
Dota, Kenya, etc. I dont drink much iced coffee now but it was usually just
leftover I had decanted from a French Press into a glass, then later had
the thought I would ice it. But I suppose I have tried hust about all of
them iced by this method... I like the dark roasts iced too (while I am not
a consistent fan of them as hot coffee)...
Now the Monkey Blend, I must admit, I do NOT like as a filter coffee at
all. I mean, its not bad, but all the things that make it good espresso are
just dull and flat as filter drip IMHO. On this same note, if you ever see
anyone selling a coffee as dual use, filter drip AND espresso, chances are
slim it really works for both. The Moka Kadir blend does out of sheer luck.
I intended it for filter and it just happens to make a really great
espresso for those who like the fruity pungent espresso. But in genereal a
good espresso blend can't ...and shouldn't ....make great filter drip
coffee too...
