I don't know about the lots part but...
On Illy's old web site there was a statement that espresso was
better enjoyed with sugar.  Their rationale was that the sugar
further reduced the surface tension of the coffee and allowed
it to better penetrate the taste buds and provide a longer
and more fulfilling aftertaste.
In my experience a moderate amount, 1 espresso spoon (1/2
teaspoon) in a restricted double does seem to allow the
coffee to linger longer.
I did go to the Illy site(s) to find the reference but it's
been completely redone in flash and I can't find it.  Lots
of good information though.

Espresso is 'supposed' to be drunk however you like it.  I belong to a 
couple of Italian-American clubs, and every first generation Italian 
immigrant uses sugar with their espresso.
