ASCII is only 7 bits so 176 decimal doesn't exist.
If it were rendered on an ASCII terminal it would be rendered as a
zero or ASCII 48 (176-128).  Most ASCII terminals simply stripped
the high bit.
ASCII comes from an era when Americans didn't recognize that other
languages existed (proposed to ANSI in 1963 adopted in 1968).  It
had no facilities to render accented characters.
