Sometime back someone mentioned their best experience boiling water with an electric kettle. I seem to remember "Sunbeam" something-or-other, but didn't save the reference. I just dusted off my French Press recently (and rediscovered the joy), and now I'm looking for an easier/faster way to boil the water. I'm looking for that nice little addition to my coffee corner, but it doesn't have to be pretty; speed is the main thing... homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |

The reference to the Sunbeam was probably to the Sunbeam Coffeemaster vac pots, which have lower units that boil water very, very quickly. While available at ebay, thrift shops and antique stores, the Sunbeam vac pots have not been manufactured for many years. I read that same post several months back and proceeded to buy a Braun electric kettle locally. It has been a pleasure to use (as I would guess any brand would be). Very quick and it seems somehow much safer (from a hot water handling perspective) than the old gas stove approach. Regards - Thom |

Tom sells the Bodum Ibis - Cordless Electric Kettlehttp://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.misc.shtml"..remarkably fast bringing the water to near boil temperature ..perfect for French Press brewing (which we were using) or pour-over type brewing. Their speed is due to an oversized Stainless Steel heating coil in the carafe. " mas homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |
I found a valuable contraption for boiling water. It is called a teapot. Proper use requires that you open the pour cover or else it makes a loud whistling sound. If you put in clean water measured to the amount you are going to drink and boil that amount, I find it doesn't take much longer than grinding the coffee beans and setting up the coffee making device (vac pot, french press, swiss gold) to receive the beans. They can be purchased in the 10-20 dollar range and the $12 one I got carried a 20 year warranty. Proper use is a little technical. It requires pouring in the water, placing it on a special heating unit on top of a stove, and setting that unit temperature to High. Mistakes are often made by novices in that they apply heat to the wrong burner, and wonder why the water doesn't boil. The most common mistake is filling the device with enough water to make 20 cups of coffee, and then complaining because it takes too long to boil the 2 cups of water they need. Also, some people make the mistake of leaving the remaining 18 or so cups in the pot and reusing the water. If you can handle the technical challenge, I highly recommend this device for boiling water. It is cheap fast and effecient. In addition, a thermometer is easy to insert if precise temperature control is desired (as with the french press). *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 10/31/2001 at 10:11 AM tarnim wrote: <Snip> (and <Snip> boil <Snip> Steve Shank Oregon Computer Solutionshttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast">http://www.steveshank.comhomeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |
Hi, I purchased a Russell Hobbs Model 3181US, 1800 watt, 1.8 litre capacity for my wife, since she drinks a lot of tea. It is a cordless model, which means it has a base with a cord, but the kettle is removable. It also uses an Optec disc, which, from what I understand, is an element which is printed on the disc inside the kettle. Since the disc is in direct contact with the water, it boils quickly. We've been very happy with it. Joe WBPII - Bodum Antigua - *$ Proteo Barista (espresso only) |

Toastmaster made a line of appliances designed by FA Porsche. There was a very cool coffee brewer/kettle combo, and a kettle (there were a couple of others as well, but I can't recall what they were). They are all heavily textured and brushed steel on the outside, and deeeeeeeep purple (almost black) plastic inserts and mouldings. Well, when Toastmaster went toast, Canadian Tire up here seemed to get their entire stock of the cordless kettles. So I bought a couple. One for the office, one for home, one for my Dad. I liked the look. But now I like something else more - how bloody fast they are. I haven't timed it, but I have compared it to our other main kettle in the house - a Braun cordless. The Toastmaster Porsche takes literally half the time to boil 1 litre of water that the Braun model does. In fact, if I'm quick, I can almost boiler 2 1 litre batches in it by the time the Braun decided it's had enough and kills the heat (at boil). Last time I checked (about a month ago) Canadian Tire still had a couple on the shelf... dirt cheap. I bought the three for $32.95 each, and I remember seeing it at Eatons about 3 years ago (along with the ultra cool brewer/kettle combo) for over $100 at the time. My best is the Bodum cordless kettle. It's lightening fast and only cost me $8 new, in one of the local thrift shops...I have a couple of others (Rival and another brand which escapes me)which work quite well, but the idea of it being cordless is the selling point of the Bodum, for me... homeroast mailing listhttp://lists.sweetmarias.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast |
