I've got the Barista Aroma that's sold by Starbucks. It's a drip machine that dumps into an 8cup capacity stainless steel thermos. In the interest of this recent water temp measuring effort, I decided to measure the temp at the output of the sprayhead. I filled the maker to the full 8cup level with cold water. Using a digital thermometer, the initial water temp was 192F and it increased over the total brew to a high of 206F at the end. The total brew time was 7 minutes on the nose. I like the unit for ease of use, but it's not as easy to clean as a unit that would use a glass thermos. The Barista uses a stainless steel thermos and the metal tends to be harder to remove coffee stain than glass. With a glass thermos, I can use Urnex and with very little effort, the glass shines like new. With the metal thermos, a lot more scrubbing is required along with the Urnex. There are probably those who would also say that glass is better so that no metallic taste is imparted to the brew. I haven't noticed any metallic taste versus brewing into a glass container/thermos. The thermos keeps the coffee hot for many hours (practically all day), but we all know how coffee doesn't improve with time. Because the coffee drops directly into a thermos there is no heating element required and thus one less part to fail in the future. One last thing on the Barista, the white plastic screw-on top permanently stains after a few uses and won't come totally clean even after soaking in Urnex overnight. This is simply a matter of cosmetics though and doesn't really affect anything. Hope this helps. Coffenut :^) |
