Topic: HTML (9 msgs / 272 lines)

Everyone has an opinion but I think we are missing the point.
I have been on this list for only a year but I have seen this topic come up
several times. And it was a year ago that I last read Tom's rules for the
list so I checked today and I did not see anything about turning off HTML. I
have, out of courtesy, turned it off, however, I did buy a new computer and
IT WAS TURNED ON WITHOUT MY DOING!
But there have also been a lot of good new people join the list who have no
idea this creates a problem. And, there will always be new people joining
the list or others, like myself, who unknowingly have it turned on. It will
never stop no matter how many times someone complains. If Tom thinks it is
important then he should post it in the rules so all new people will know
and you who complain will have a valid reason.
And why not work together on this, stop making it one sided? There are a lot
of things you can do if you do not want to receive HTML. For one, don't get
the digest, get the email. You can delete a lot of messages just by subject.
And you don't have to skim the entire mesage to hunt for items of interest.
And a big plus, if you see it's from me, or someone else you don't like,
you can just delete it right away and not let it ruin your day. And Tom has
great ideas on how to use it, they are posted on the rules page.
But at a minimum, be polite if you must complain.
Enjoy,
steve

The HTML discussion is why I say good by.

Floyd...just shrug it off. These stupid HTML threads pop up over and
over again in here and in alt.coffee. I have no idea why people are so
opinionated about something so frivolous. This is a coffee list and Tom
has made it clear that HE alone will police the list if he sees fit. We
should let his do that and we should talk about homeroast.

There used to be a FAQ for the list that did request posters not to use
HTML or post any attachments. Dunno what happened to it or if it still exists.

Hey Bruce, as long as we are into a bitching session, I couldn't care less=
whether mail is html or not, but could you, and others who quote long=
messages to which you respond, put your response at the top so we don't=
need to scroll all the way down to the bottom to find:
"I agree 100%.
Bruce "
Good message, but it'd be easier if it was at the top.
Thanks

This is called "blaming the victim". I work in an environment where
I'm seated in front of my monitor most of the day. When e-mail
arrives, it is usually something I need to deal with pronto, except
for this digest and two others. Three times a day, I can manage these
interruptions. A hundred times a day, I cannot, and I would
unsubscribe. A Hotmail account is no help, that is tatamount to
unsubscribing, when would I get around to reading it? Balance that
against NO IDENTIFIABLE ADVANTAGE to using HTML, except that some
people don't have to change the defaults.
Maybe Tom can put it in the welcome message. And some day, he'll get
free and zero-maintenance software that, like one of the managers of
another digest I receive, simply replaces all attachments, including
HTML, with "Non-text attachments of this message have been
removed". But until that day, please try to turn off HTML.

LOL! Victim? Poor thing. I am sorry but all I am trying to do is offer
solutions. I also turned HTML off but that is not going to stop it. We are
all busy but most of us seem to manage. There aren't a hundred emails from
this list in a day, maybe 20 on a good day. They can be filtered. They would
only interrupt your day if you choose to have it that way. Ironically,
sitting in front of a computer screen all day puts you at an advantage over
alot of other people. There are many ways to solve this but some would
rather whine about it.
I apologize to most of you who really do enjoy this forum but ignorance
really gets me going sometimes. I've spoken more than I should. Apparently
it isn't helping anyway. I promise, this is my last email on this subject.
If HTML is on oh well. How about an attachment or two to go with it?

Pam,
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is the method for
changing fonts, character properties and embedding graphics. It is the
method used for creating web pages. Since your web browser knows how
to handle the HTML it simply manuevers the text appropriately.

Thanks for the explanation, John. I shouldn't turn the HTML off, right?
Pam
