Thanks for the info. With that info in hand I have confirmed it is what one retailer is calling a portable expresso/cappacino maker, but it is in the moka pot section. Knowing that the knob is supposed to stay open makes it seem a whole lot less bomb like. What kind of coffee/water proportions are used in it and/or is it for single cups or multiples? I realize personal taste is the final factor, but I don't see much use in him reinventing the wheel if he doesn't have to. John, On most of these units there are measurements stamped into the side of both the water container and the coffee section. Some models have an insert which is placed in the coffee section which allows one to choose from different "standard" coffee measurements... Other than that, you might try going to www.coffeegeek.com for more detailed instructions, or contact the manufacturer...
