Hi, My original Behmor drum seem to have a problem with the mechanism that closes the top of the drum. Sometimes the drum is opening up during a roast. To prevent this behavior I am probably going to order a new drum, so I have to decide wich of the drums I want. I am roasting Yemen and other small beans so the drum designed for small beans should be the obvious choice. I talked to the Danish distributor about the 2 drums. He suggested to get the regular drum because too much chaff get caught in the drum designed for small beans. What are other Behmor users finding about the 2 drums? I did not really follow all Behmor threads before the model for Europe was released last summer, so this may have been discussed earlier on the list. I have both drums. The large one arrived with the roaster back when we didn't have a choice. The announcement of the smaller grid drum seemed like an answer to the irritating loss of small beans. While it is better able to keep the small beans inside, some still manage to find a way out. As for chaff being trapped in the, I haven't found it to be any worse with the small grid that the large grid. In fact nearly all the chaff gets out of the drum, only part of it being trapped by the chaff collector >-). My large grid drum sits on the shelf while I use the small one for everything. If I am missing an advantage to the large grid with certain beans, I'm unaware of it. I would suggest you buy the small grid drum. I'll agree with Bob on this. I don't remember which bean caused me to buy the small grid drum, but I use it for all my roasting now. No extra chaff that I can tell. I've got both drums and I don't notice any greater chaff retention in the s= maller vs. the larger grid drum. Ed |
I have both drums. I always use the small mesh drum and just shake the chaff off. It's not a big deal. Greg = |
<Snip> Add me to the list of people who only use the small grid drum. I bought one because of Yemens falling through, and decided it wasn't worth the extra space to keep the big one inside the kitchen. The large grid drum is out in a garage cabinet somewhere, I never use it. The issue of chaff being trapped in the small drum was mentioned somewhere, maybe on Behmor's site (I don't remember), but it has not been noticeable for me. There is very little chaff trapped by the small grid, certainly not noticeably more then the large grid. It's a non-issue. My experience is the same as the others. The large drum came with the machine, but we bought the small drum. That's the one I use. Only a VERY small amount of chaff gets stuck in the drum. I just vacuum it out when I vacuum the machine. I also have both drums, but use the small grid one 99.9% of the time. p Greg Hollrigel wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
Hi, Thank you all for the feedback! I am told that Behmor these days only ship the small grid drum, wich is in line with what people at least here are using anyway. Claus |
I'll go against the trend. I have both drums and I switch between the two, based on the bean. I tried the test of roasting the same coffee (a larger bean) in both drums and the small drum definitely retained more chaff and required more shaking to get it clear. If I could only have 1 drum, I would definitely get the small, but since I have both, I use the large one when the bean allows. Like Seth, I use the small mesh drum for small beans, the large mesh drum for larger beans. That works for me. I would think you might get a little better heat flow into the drum with the larger mesh drum with beans that won't fall through. -- Ed Bourgeois aka farmroast Amherst MA.http://coffee-roasting.blogspot.com/Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
I like most people have both drums. I went to using the small drum only because there was no significant difference in the amount of chaff left in the drum (I didn't pick out each piece of chaff with tweezers to do an actual statistical test). Only the Longberrys really left a lot of chaff in the small drum. When you vacuum out the Behmor, vacuum the outside of the drum with the beans still inside to get as much chaff out of the drum before dumping the beans. I have done this with both drums. Like what Ed said below I decided to test both drums with the different size beans and see if I noticed any differences in my cup. So far I really haven't noticed a difference between the two drums as far as flavour or roasting results. I have only done this test for about 6 lbs so far. John H. |
After vacuuming the chaff from the roaster and the drum (with the beans in), I shake the drum vigorously over a pan which gets a lot more chaff off the beans. I read somewhere that home roasted beans don't get the same kind of agitation that commercially roasted beans do and that leads to more chaff remaining on the beans. I use the same shake method I use before the roast to liberate any smalls and broken pieces. -Chris Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
I just use the small grid drum now. If you want a large grid drum you can probably find one cheap second hand!
