Coffee Lovers, keep on drinking. I found this little tid-bit of information that you will all find interesting. Coffee Protects Liver Drinking coffee might protect against the progressive liver damage that results from excess drinking and alcoholism. Consuming coffee seems to offer a protective benefit against alcoholic cirrhosis, and the more coffee a person consumes the less risk they seem to have of dying from alcoholic cirrhosis. People drinking one cup of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to have alcoholic cirrhosis. People drinking two or three cups were 40 percent less likely to have alcoholic cirrhosis. For people who drank four or more cups of coffee a day, there was an 80 percent reduction in risk. Researchers have no idea what it is in coffee that offers the benefit. "People drinking two or three cups were 40 percent less likely to have alcoholic cirrhosis. For people who drank four or more cups of coffee a day, there was an 80 percent reduction in risk. Researchers have no idea what it is in coffee that offers the benefit." I can't help but wonder how the alcohol variable was controlled in this study. Could it be that people who drink obnoxious amounts of coffee simply drink less alcohol and thus are less likely to develop cirrhosis? If so why? Could it be cultural? Perhaps the avid drinkers have found their vice in life and thus have no need for alcohol. Another variable worth considering would be to consider the relationship between income and alcohol consumption and compare that with the relationship between income and coffee consumption. (Not that there is any, I am just trying to think of possible third factors, income is usually a good place to look because it determines a lot). Were these issues addressed in the article? Like Ryan, The first thing I thought about was how they did the experiment, where, what were the controls and on what or who? John H. |
They found a correlation, not a cause and effect relationship. A true scientific study would be immoral to do because it would require feeding a group of people large amounts of alcohol and watching their health decline. A few years ago, they found that many schizophrenia patients had above average levels of caffeine in their blood. They came up with a theory that caffeine may cause schizophrenia but upon further examination it was found that these patients drank above average amounts of coffee and that explained their higher levels. There was no cause and effect relationship. Agreed, I was all set to start repeating my experiments with using whiskey instead of water in my espresso extractions since I figured it would be the perfect beverage :-) -Chris On Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 7:01 AM, Bob Hazen wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
