Ira, I can't compliment you enough for the work you've done putting this great piece of software together for us. Yesterday I roasted 4 lbs of coffee using P2 for 3 of them. I notice that the temp drop of my machine occurred about 1 min before the temp drop on the Behmor Thing profile? Is this an anomaly with my machine or have you or others on this list noticed a similar pattern? The first 2 lbs and the last lb I roasted were using P2 and the third lb I roasted I used P4. I don't preheat my machine and it was about an hour between roasts. I noticed this pattern for all three roasts using P2. John H. John, I believe you may have run into an issue that was reported at the end of last year on CoffeeGeek, and just confirmed by Joe Behm, specifically that using the + and - buttons before starting the roast only affects the timing of the last leg (extending or shortening the total roast time) but does not alter the timings in the other legs of the roast, thus will not move the power drop on P2. Unfortunately, everyone believed before this was verified that the changes affected all legs proportionally and Ira programmed BehmorThing based on that understanding. I recommend that you use the A B C and D buttons to move the power drop in P2, and in extreme cases you can add a pre-roast time of up to two minutes (hitting stop before you've exceeded two minutes and then starting the real roast) if you need to extend out the second leg, but I prefer to use a smaller load size (10 - 13 oz) so that the P2 drop falls within the A B C D profile times. The Behmor and BehmorThing should match up in timings as long as you don't program BehmorThing with time changes before the roast (I believe Ira has already updated this to remove the buttons for this). Here's Joe Behm's response to this issue:http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/homeroast/471861#471861It appears that he's posted a new document on profile adjustments on the Behmor site: http://www.behmor.com/pdf/Profile%20adjustmentsv1.pdfThis has been a contentious issue and one I was involved in early on by testing and reproducing the reported issue, but I believe that this information will help everyone who uses a Behmor to understand how it works and avoid any misunderstandings when using the P2 roast profile. -Chris On Wed, Mar 3, 2010 at 8:35 AM, John and Emma wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

This brings up a question I have been wondering about. If you use P2 1lb and start the machine and then push two +'s, when does the power drop occur? Jim Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
The only way to change where the power drop occurs in the P2 roast on the Behmor is by selecting the different roast time buttons, A, B, C (D is not used on P2 profile). For the 1 # profile, the power drop occurs (according to BehmorThing and my experience backs this up) at the following times: A 10:48 B 12:00 C 12:54 Pushing the + or - button only affects the length of the roast by extending or diminishing the last leg. I regularly roast 1 # batches of decaf for the in-laws. For this large of a batch, C1 happens well beyond 12:54, so for this, I program in a 1# P2 C profile and run the beans at P1 for 2 minutes then stop and restart with a 1# P2 C button (BehmorThing has built-in pre-roast functionality to track all this). My last batch, the power drop occurred at 14:53 (12:54 + 1:59 pre-roast) and my first crack occurred less then a minute later at 15:42. I was able to stretch the time between the end of first to the start of second to over three minutes this way and ended up with a nice roast. For my other roasts, I roast smaller batches and usually don't do a pre-roast. The last Sumatra I roasted on a 1# P2 A profile for 9.4 oz of greens. This time the power drop came at 10:48 after first crack had already started (10:16) and I only got about 2:20 separation between first and second. I still consider this a good roast but if I wanted to move first crack out I would use more beans in a future batch. My normal batch sizes for my roaster are 10-13 oz, but this was part of the early greens that a vac sealed in foodsaver bags in individual batch sizes instead of my latest storage method of just storing in mason jars so I started with a fixed amount. Hope this helps explain things somewhat. -Chris On Wed, Mar 3, 2010 at 1:38 PM, Jim Anderson wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://host.sweetmariascoffee.com/mailman/listinfo/homeroast_lists.sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |

If the temperature drop occurs at 10:48 elapsed as it does when you press 1Lb P2 A there is nothing you can do to change that other than pressing B to drop at 12:00 or C to drop at 12:54. If you press the 1lb P2 buttons, you get those 3 choices and nothing else. This is the beauty of the pre-heat - up to 2 minutes - to vary the time of the drop on P2. Vary the pre-heat time varies the time of the drop to where you want it. You are set free. You will never be locked into A B C or D ever again! It is so simple, it is much easier to use than the way we thought it originally worked. In your example, if you want the P2 to drop at 12:30, set the time to 1lb P2 B. Then, run the Pre-heat on 1/4 lb P1 A for 30 seconds. At 30 seconds, hit OFF, then immediately hit 1 lb P2 B. You have just changed the drop to occur at 12:30. This gives you so much flexibillity. I am a much happier user, and I never have to get out my calculator any more. -Bonnie P.
