My drip brewer is feelin' a might sickly, so I figured I better start
shopping for a new one.
I now have a Mr Coffee and it's ok at best.
Anyway, I need suggestions on a well made brewer that makes great coffee.
thanks, Jimmy

I recommend the KitchenAid line. Get a Swissgold filter to go with it and
you're all set for excellent coffee without spending a fortune.

Technivorms are allegedly very good, though I've yet to see one in person. This week I plan to head over to Enschede to the Douwe Egberts store and have a look at the whole line of brewers (that's in Holland I am).
For the USA, a Bunn is excellent. A bit fast on the brew, but good saturation and temp.
Whatever you do, don't get a Melitta Fast Brew. It advertises 200 deg. F brewing temps and a fast brew (under 5 minutes per pot). It's fast, alright, but cold. It does no better than 185. I'm going to return mine that I have at work and get a Bunn.

Chris,
Are you going to be able to take in CREMA 2000? Sounds like a great
group and I'm hoping it takes hold and grows.

Unfortunately not, as my business trip schedule doesn't coordinate with that date. :-(
However, I've had many opportunities to visit "HV" (a.k.a. Jeroen), and sampled his coffees, hospitality, and vast collection of moka pots, vac pots, and other misc. hardware. He's a first class coffee nut!

I agree with Lee regarding the KitchenAid line of coffee makers.
I bought the 12 cup model for times when we need more than 4-5
cups, and it is an excellent drip brewer.

They also overflow very easily when fresh roasted coffee is
brewed. This results in ground coffee in the water tank. Makes
a real mess. I returned one and bought the KitchenAid 12 cup.

My Technivorm is out in the garage with some other mistakes I made. The Bunn
made its way back onto the kitchen counter where I use it every weekday
morning.

I agree about the Kitchenaide line, but I had problems with the grounds
overflowing the swissgold, so I switched back to Melitta filters.

I haven't dripped brewed in either of those two specifically. However,
compared to our Krup's drip with Swiss Gold filter I believe the Utopia's
brew has more body. (Assuming added 1/4" rear feet to achieve avg. 2min
infusion up north with somewhat fine grind, for us it's 4 clicks finer than
the drip icon on our Maestro.)

have you looked at specialty coffee institute.com
they have a rigorous testing of some coffee makers
i went with the kitchen aid four cup brewer at thirty bucks at dmart
it passed the tests on coffee saturation and brew time okay and came in at
190 degrees on the brew temp. -guy from long island

I haven't overflowed mine, but I don't brew more than 8 to 9 cups at a time, either, so I don't fill the basket to capacity. But yes, it's a pretty poor design. The only reason I bought it was the advertised temp of 200. Otherwise, I wouldn't have touched it.

Terry,
Can you describe the differences between the Bunn and the Technivorm in brewing performance?
This is going to be a work brewer - I use my Silvia or a vac pot at home as I don't drink enough coffee by myself to justify a big drip brewer.

Yup. I need a brewer that's bigger than 4 cups for work. I've an old Mr. Coffee 4 cupper that brews close to 190, also. Not a bad machine, but it's not enough for everyone at work who has been spoiled on Dutch coffee after visiting our facility here (in Holland at the moment).

Of course, if I could talk my boss into buying a nice superauto for the office, I'd REALLY be set. I'll have to work on that, as I'm sure most of the guys would chip in for a Solis or Saeco machine. That would be the bomb...

Chris, The Technivorm is similar to the standard Braun or typical drip
machine. The water squirts through a hole in the arm over the filter basket.
It takes a cone filter, the water temp in mine was just over 190 F, and for
the most part it appears well constructed. The reviews I read stated the
brewing time was just under 5 minutes for 10 cups (48 oz). Mine took about 7
minutes.
The major problem was the coffee saturation with the water, or more
precisely, the lack of saturation. You can lift the lid and see the water
squirting onto the coffee grounds, and you can even give it a stir while it's
brewing, which is kind of cool. But for a $200 machine, I should not have to
stir anything. I tried grinding finer and finer to improve the grounds
saturation, but after a month I retired it to the garage.
The Bunn is fast. Dump the water in the top, close the lid, and a spray head
showers the grounds with almost 190 F water. Three minutes later you have 50
oz. of coffee. The water is kept hot all the time in the reservoir and within
5-6 minutes you are ready to make another pot. I have to grind the beans more
coarsely for the Bunn and use about 30% more coffee to get the strength I
like. A finer ground for a full pot and it will overflow the filter. The
coffee has a smooth flavor with no bitter flavor at all. With the water in
contact with the grounds less than three minutes, there is not much chance of
over extraction. If you like strong coffee, you will probably need to brew
less than 50 ounces or the grounds will overflow the filter. The Bunn should
make an excellent office machine.
Sorry, the Technivorm doesn't impress me any more than a $20 Braun, which is
what I used before I purchased the Bunn. Well, Hario vac on the weekends and
I use the SL-90 for espresso.

Thanks for the info, Terry. I'm going over to Enschede this weekend to the Douwe Egberts store (BIG Dutch coffee co.) They have a whole line of "DE" labeled Technivorms, and the model we pay almost $200 for in the US is about $80 here, only it's 220V. But, I want to look at these things up close.
I got a lame response from Melitta on the Fast Brew, so that one is going back to Target. POS.
A Bunn will be my choice. I do think that people feel the Bunns need more coffee as they brew such a clean, smooth pot. They use Bunns at the Cedarburg Roastery and use 1 cup of grounds per 64oz. pot, right on the SCAA recommendation. It brews a SUPER clean cup, strong. But, it seems weak as there is NO bitterness or bite. If I brew that strong on a regular, undertemp drip machine, it starts to get that pungent bite. My normal brew amount is 8 to 9 cups at work, so I'll have no problems with overflowing, I hope.
Thanks again!
Chris
