Topic: CSA thoughts and Columbian (4 msgs / 98 lines)

I noticed some poundage thoughts on CSA membership. I thought between 50
and 100 pounds was a lot. However, I know of one member of the club that
has over 1,000 pounds and it isn't Tom and Maria! My poor wife is now a
bona fide convert and has passed the test to be in the CSA. She used to not
even drink coffee! It has been very hot and my wife had two cards filled
up at two different espresso bars in the area. She got a nice iced drink
from one of them and she couldn't stand it! She ended up giving it away to
my daughter. She then tried one with her other free card, and gave that one
away too. She just couldn't stand the taste. At home she took some vac
brewed Uganda-Mexican blend, mixed it with crushed ice and some milk, cream
and sugar for a good iced coffee drink. She gave my daughter a sip and she
couldn't believe that no chocolate had been added. My daughter thought it
was much better than the ones at the espresso bars too. Ah! Converts to
homeroasting snobbery!
I finally got over the Juan Valdez and Mrs. Olsen prejudice and ordered some
Colombian. I tried my first brew of Colombian Organic Bucaramanga 100%
Bourbon taken 15 sec. into second crack this AM. It was really good. I
liked how smooth it was. It was a nice all-around coffee. It is what Juan
and Mrs. Olsen really were looking for in a cup of coffee. Nothing really
jumped out, it was a nice complex coffee all the way from hot to cool. I
think I will be drinking more of it. It isn't as bright as a central, nor
as earthy as a Brazil. Anyone else out there into Colombian coffee? I
never here much on the posts. Suggestions or comments on roasting them?

I really loved the Excelso Medellin Tom had a last year, I still have some
and drink it regularly. It is the most requested coffee I have. I tried
the Columbian FNC Antioquia Peaberry and really liked it, My favorite was
the Santa Isabella if I remember correctly. It was on the list a month or
so ago- tried a pound of it, liked it so much I went to order 20 and it was
already gone.
The Popayon of several years ago was another favorite of ours. I think
Columbians are tremendous coffees, everyday-wonderful, incredible drinking
year round coffees. Of all the coffees I have Columbian is the one I could
not live without. But you are right- they don't get to much notice. Guess
they just get taken for granted, always good, always there.

A Colombian (Colombian Organic Mesa de los Santos) was the first roast
in my new HotTop; it's not the first one I've roasted, but you describe
its taste very much as I experienced it. I don't know if it was the
coffee or the roaster, but If it continues to impress me as it did this
morning, I'll be ordering at least 5# of it next time.

When I first got my roaster last January I only ordered the 8-pack sampler,
and I didn't want to practice on it so I went to my local coffee house (they
roast their own beans with a Syd & Jerry) and asked for a pound of
"something easy to roast." They gave me a pound of "Columbian" and off I
went. My first roast was so good, it was like the difference between
can-coffee and grinding your own. Nothing I've roasted since has been so
impressive to me.

After I learned a little more about beans, origins, and such, I went back to
see exactly what kind of Columbian I'd gotten. Nobody knew.
I have some of the Columbian Organic Mesa de Los Santos Coop coffee, and
it's good, but not what I was looking for. I'd like to try the Bucaramanga
and the Maragogype. I see you recommend the Bucaramanga, so I'll order it
and probably some of the Maragogype next order.
Speaking of next order, that ought to coincide with the rumored moving sale.
I better save up a few pennies. :-) What could it be? Free shipping?
