I have tried only one decaf so far, Costa Rican SHB SWP. IMHO it is almost as good as the average regular bean, and worlds above any storebought coffee. I see it is still on the list. The selection keeps growing, so take your pick. I trust that if it did not pass Tom's taste test it would not be stocked. -- Ken Mary - Aromaroast - whirlyblade - decanter ---------- <Snip> <Snip> |
Ken, would like to second you on this. I'm not much of a decaf drinker; however, my wife drinks decaf after 9 pm, so I bought some from Tom for her. It's ~far~ better than most of what you can buy already roasted "fresh" in non-decalf. The only thing that gave me pause for thought is the color...it's much darker before and after roasting than is regular coffee. Highly recommended. Decaf doesn't smell very good when roasting, though... at least to me. I like the taste of the decafs from Tom but they (and all decafs I've ever roasted... I roast some for a friend that he buys from another supplier) smell odd and fruity-chemically when roasting, not the sweet grass or hay smells I love so much from good green coffee. I don't know why this is... Ted <Snip> |

Turned out I liked only one of them: Tanzania Peaberry. This isn't meant as any sort of disparaging remark about Tom; rather it goes to show (to me at least) the variety he carries because tastes vary so much. On the other hand, I keep seeing the same coffees pop up on the list, Harrar, Yirgacheffe, etc. so obviously there are some favorites that a lot of you folks have in common. I was hoping perhaps there was a consensus on the decaf as well; with freight an lb. of coffee is fairly expensive, only to have it sit around for a year unused, unloved, you get the picture. Mike |
