We were going for the #4 coffee and the #9 coffee ... not sure which
I really wanted more because I was really impressed with about 8
coffees (all in all, I think this was the best COE auction in
general). I was just a little scared we could end up with both. It
didnt happen: someone was really tenacious with #4, and it looks like
Japanese bidders as well as the one Norwegian company took a lot of
the auction. But we did get #9 on a group bid with Willem Boot, Ecco
Caffe and others... its going to take like 6 weeks min. to see this
stuff though.

I've just seen a news article on the SCAE (the European equivalent of the SCAA) website regarding the El Salvador Cup Of Excellence http://www.scae.com/default.asp?nid0).I just wondered whether Tom had managed to get anything interesting this year? Tom? Anyone else know? Phil |

It says on the home page, under "What's New?": "Auction Updates: [...] Expect some El Salvador Cup of Excellence selections too - we formed a group to win the #9 coffee, our favorite ". Would you expect less of our host? ;-) Seth Goodman |

<Snip> You can certainly chide me for being an idiot and looking in the wrong place. I went to the Green Coffee offering page (which is the bookmark I keep) before posting, and the latest I can see there is the posting from last week about the Sidamo. I've now checked the "What's New" on the home page and see your point. No, of course I would expect no less of our host which is of course why I asked. As an SCAE member I go their site from time to time and I thought "Aha! I bet Tom's gone for some of that then!" and hence the post. Yum, indeed. Interesting that nearly all the winners were Boubon variety, very little of the usual El Salvador Pacamara. Some of the winners include a variety called "Kenya". I wonder what the background of that variety is? The most discriptive cupping notes I've ever seen are from that auction. Check out the cupping notes for the first prize winner: Score: 91.66 points Cupping notes: Good crisp cup, fruitiness, chocolate caramel, winey, buttery, smooth, cream port wine, fruity, citric, aroma, complex Yrige-berry, lemon pepper aroma, stayed sweet, hearty, well put together, blueberry, sweet, floral, rose, black tea, sweet, balanced, walnuts, bergamot, apple, enduring aftertaste, spice, pepper tones, tight knit, floral aroma, cocoa, ripe fruit at dawn, sweet leathery aroma, sensual, rich dark molasses, toffee, claret. Wow, purchased for $14 lb, the whole 18 sacks! Tom liked the one he bought even more. I'll have to try some. Charlie wrote <Snip> Oh yes, me too. I'm getting into the (good/bad - you decide) habit of ordering "sexy" coffees from Tom and then shipping them across the Atlantic at surface rate to keep the cost manageable. Managed to get some KBM too. At least my stash isn't as big as some of you guys have - it's around 40 kg (about 88lbs) - but it's creeping up, and it's all Tom's fault. Bless him! Must drink more ..... All the best Phil |
Phil writes: <Snip> I'm down to about 4 1/2 stone. But...I missed out on the KBM, so I'm surely going to load up on KXF. I buy most of my annual supply of coffee during the summer so now is my big buying season. I'm going to get some of that El Salvadoran COE... I'm going to skip the Costa Ricans this year and load up on Panamanians instead. I'm going to get some of the Nicaragua Segovia Miraflores and the giant-bean Nicaraguan Pacamara Tom was talking about. I'll prolly get some of that "Horse" just to see what everyone is talking about. No kenyas. Definitely some Bali Shinzan... I'm already well stocked on Indonesian and Yemeni coffees. I should add 60 pounds, or so, over the next three months. That'll push me up over 100 pounds, which is just about my annual usage. :-) -- Rick |
I don't know why so many are turned off by Kenyas. They have been one of my favorite, and most unique coffees since I started down this slippery slope back in 1976. They have changed over the years though, and the Mika is about as close to the 'old' Kenyas as I can find. My wife and I are 'thoroughly' enjoying Kenya AA Mika this week.
