Thanks for the heads up on the dimmer 
controller.  I have the info printed out to modify the popper so I will try 
to do that.  Wish me luck.  I really appreciate the help I am 
getting from you and all the other veteral roasters.  I am having a 
wonderful time since I discovered home roasting.  The coffee is sure a 
lot better, and with a little experience and help some from friends, I am sure 
it will get a lot better.

Hello Betty
 
I am kind of new with this, and I am also roasting 
my coffee with a popcorn popper.  Works like a charm!  I am also in 
the process of putting a shut off switch for the resistance, so that the beans 
can cool down.  Do you mind sharing the info that Mike has given to 
you.  I might need it, before I burn my popper.

1500 watt dimmers can be had on Ebay for $20 to $30.  I bought two, brand
new.  Retail is about twice to three times that amount.  You would need a
dimmer with at least that much power rating to control the heater and motor.

I do think a variac is the better choice, but much more costly for a beginner
roaster.  Especially when an unmodified popper works pretty darned good.
