Topic: e-mail etiquette plea (2 msgs / 69 lines)

Now that we are using new mailing-list software, please take a moment
to make sure your mailer is set up to respond in a courteous
fashion. We can finally receive digests (one mailing a day -- the one
I'm replying to contained 17 messages) from the main list, and this is
most convenient. However, EVERYTHING in those 17 messages combined
into one is visible. This includes:
-- the full text of quoted messages. Many people's mailers set them up
with the complete text of the message being replied to. If you add
a line or two at the top and send it off, you may not be aware of
just how long your message is. People getting messages individually
can just stop reading. Those of us getting the digest have to wade
through the whole quoted message (most of which may be totally
irrelevant) before getting to the next one. PLEASE trim down quoted
   messages as much as possible.
-- HTML mail. Most browsers have an option (it may be a default) to
send both text and HTML equivalent in one message. If you receive
this mail as a single message on a similar browser, you may never
notice. It just looks a bit nicer (proportionally-spaced text and
formatting). Those of us not using such browsers, or getting the
digest, see not only a text version of your message, but an HTML
copy, which is really ugly. It looks like this (you should see a
lot of commands enclosed in angle brackets):

Thanks!

I find it easiest to set up a filter that will sort the messages from the
homeroast list to a folder. Then, I can read messages at my leisure, and
long headers are not a problem.
Peace,
Glen
