Topic: Drum Roasting Nuts (3 msgs / 78 lines)

Drum Roasters, advance and be recognized. Have any of you roasted
almonds, hazel nuts,
pecans or walnuts in the drums. I can roast two to three pounds of nuts
in the kitchen oven
at 250 F and wonder if a drum roaster could perform additional duties
beyond coffee beans.
I'd like to roast five pounds of nuts at a time. That may require a BBQ
drum such as Ron makes.
A separate drum for the nuts may be necessary too. Can the BBQ
temperatures be maintained
at 250 F. ? Some nut roasters prefer higher temps around 350 F for
shorter oven times between
seven and twelve minutes; but, I like the results from the low temp and
longer oven time of
thirty minutes. The dry roasting is fine. I don't use oil or salt with
the oven roasts.
Any advice, experiences, ideas welcome
Thanks,

The only nuts that I have roasted are peanuts 1lb at 375 for 10 min and the
results were good.
The drum I build may do quite well with other nuts but the stirring vanes
are quite tall and with the larger size of a nut compared to a coffee bean,
would limit the amount one could roast. I'm sure it will roast quite well.
As to the need of 2 separate drums, it depends on your taste buds and the
amount of nuts you plan to roast and the frequency . It is a stainless drum
and could be washed in a dishwasher if you felt that the flavors would
mingle.

Bob,
I roast hazel nuts in my hot-air popper. It works great!
