1) From: cationic
Folks,
I will be in San Diego at a conference next week. Do you know any good
places for espresso or coffee?
Thanks!
Regards,
Rafael

What area of SD is the conference at? Since I got here in June, I've had
little luck with the independents.

The conference will be at the Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel on 400 West
Broadway. I hope to have enough free time to venture into other parts of the
city, though.

There is a Peet's Coffeehouse in Mission Hills (about 2 miles north of
downtown - straight up 5th Avenue) at the corner of University and 3rd.
Probably one of the best (or at least consistent) in SD. Next door is Bread
et Cie for great bread and sandwiches... they had some pistachio/anise
biscotti over Christmas that was 'to die for'.
I beleave that Pannikin's still has a presence downtown at the corner of 'G'
and 7th. They were the best in town back in the 70's and 80's and one of
the only specialty roasters. You better call on that one though as they may
have gone yuppie and moved to North County.
Of course - there are Starbucks everywhere.

At 501 West Broadway there is a kiosk on the ground floor that is operated
by Ryan Brothers Coffee. They are the only local roaster in south county
that I can endorse. You should be able to jog across the street during your
breaks. I'm at 600 West Broadway. Email me offline, and I'll bring in
extra homeroast.
FYI - Your conference is across the street from where portions of the movie
TRAFFIC was filmed. In the movie when the characters leave the Hotel San
Diego you can see the Wyndham.
In North County, the best coffee roaster/cafe I've been to is:
La Costa Coffee Roasting Co
6965 El Camino Real # 208
Carlsbad, CA 92009
With the exception of Ryan Brothers and La Costa, I haven't found anything
local that impressed me.

The food at the La Jolla Pannikin's was great. However, I wouldn't serve
their coffee to a POW.

Honestly, the Starbucks in the SD airport has consistently good "coffee of
the day", their full city roast selection -its one of those starbucks that
seems to have fairly fresh roasted coffee and brew it well.
I actually used to work for the Pannikin. Some of their coffees are good,
some are okay, its hard to know which or how fresh. I still know the folks
at Caffe Moto that roast for the Pannikin -the business was split, the
cafes sold to a local person and the roasting/wholesaling taken over by Bob
Sincalir's son, Torrey and renamed Cafe Moto. I know he does a great job
with the roasting on a really unique old greman Gothot roaster .
I think Diedrichs does a good job with brewing, and they are in SD. If you
see a PJ's, they are invading the area. They are based in New Orleans and
while I know I am not sure about their quality amidst such a strange leap
in growth...

Michael, Thom, and all others who replied:
Thanks! I was in S.D. for only a couple of days, and in the conference most
of the time. I did not have time to wander far from the Wyndham hotel. I did
go to the place mentioned by Michael, it was great! Once again, the members
of the list came through.
Michael, sorry I did not e-mailed you - I knew I was not going to be able to
get away from the meetings. Maybe next time!

Rafael

Once again, I had a pretty decent cup at the SD airport starbucks. It was a
moka-java -not very fruity but good depth, good body ...and well-brewed
