| As much as I enjoy Tom's coffee in the morning, I've started to enjoy beer in the evening as well. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a website where one can purchase specialty/top notch beer? that would be a perfect day, start off with the Misty Valley from SM in my TV and finish with a carfully poured craft micro brew... | Well you need to start home brewing! Been there, done that, and what a blast it is. Buying already brewed beer is the same thing as buying a cup of Peet's brewed coffee, sacrilege. :) Just google home brewing. | Kevin, Since you roast your own coffee, you may enjoy brewing your own beer. I'm sure there are wine and beer making shops in your area. I have The Beverage People down the street from me, and they offer catalog and internet info:http://www.lagunitas.com/,their website appears to be down at the moment.">http://www.thebeveragepeople.com/My new favorite beers come from Lagunitas, also a local (to me) place,http://www.lagunitas.com/,their website appears to be down at the moment. | There are very few websites where one can purchase beer, or any other alcoholic beverage for that matter. Moreover, BevMo and the like may not be able to ship to your state at all, or they may be able to ship wine but not beer, or they may only be able to ship you beers you can already get locally. (Off the top of my head, I don't think most states allow you to ship beer at all, either in-state or out - I know Michigan doesn't.) However, there is a site that provides reviews of craft beers and of places to get them: http://www.beeradvocate.com. The trick here is to use BA's BeerFly to find a well-rated store in your area and branch out from there. Lately I've been on a "regional beer" kick, trying to drink only beers made in this state, or failing that, the Great Lakes region. (Hey, someone has to support the local economy.) Thus, my top list includes Bell's (K-Zoo), Dragonmead (11 Mile and Groesbeck), Arbor Brewing (Ypsi), and Great Lakes (Cleveland). Your list, of course, will probably vary! Hope this helps! -- Lindsay Murphy murphyl On Fri, 2008-08-08 at 09:48 -0400, Kevin wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
| I second Bonnie's recommendation. Homebrewing is a great pastime. If you are in a metropolitan area there is bound to be a brew shop close by. Best regards, Ken |
| bonnie, Thank you for the suggestion. I was actually toying with that idea. | In the Bay Area, the Oak Barrel on San Pablo in Berkeley is a fantastic place. They have a web site too, but I am not so sure about that. I really, really likehttp://northernbrewer.com. I actually visited them before the SCAA show in Minneapolis, because I like how they discuss things, and their focus. They started doing winemaking too ... I wish they would focus on one thing. I respect that in a business. Nonetheless, they are good. I try to support local buinesses as well - always buy my liquid yeast locally at least. I also want to second the motion to readhttp://beeradvocate.com. Oh, and I like the fact that Sweet Maria's is becoming almost like an adjective! It's a compliment. | Lindsay, At my sister's house in Kazoo for Christmas a couple years ago I got some Bell's beer for the boys and, thinking I needed beer for the girls, picked up a 6 of Arcadia (Battle Creek) Nut Brown Ale. | Tom, Sweet Maria's has earned the right to it's adjective standing. It IS a compliment and we are petitioning Webster's to add it as such! Thanks for what you do! Elliott |

| At the risk of being flamed I am brewing my first batch in my new Mr. Beer. I have visited a lot of the sites all ready listed and they are a great source of info and products! I went the Mr. Beer route due to lack of space in our Condo (now with a second child on the way) but fully intend on expanding my new hobby much as I have grown with Sweet Marias these past...gulp...10 years! I will be patient with the fermenting and lagering but hope that Mr. Beer isn't the "Gevalia" of the home roasting world! :-) Mike |
| Meant to say "Gevalia" of the Home Brewing world. :-) Mike |
| Mike, I'm with you, I hope the Mr. Beer isn't the Gevalia of homebrew, but if it is, so what? As miKe often says, with coffee it's not the destination, it's the journey. Probably a good way to look at life in general, including homebrew. That's my outlook, anyway. | Mr. Beer will give you a great experience and let you see how beer ferments and taste develops. It's just as easy to buy extract and hops and a five gallon glass carboy and brew that way too for more taste and variety than Mr. Beer will give you. Once you get bitten really hard, you'll want to move into all grain brewing. Then you move into the deep water a bit, but attention to detail and cleanliness will give you incredible results. ********************* Ed Needham "to absurdity and beyond!"http://www.homeroaster.com********************* |
