Topic: [Homeroast] Favorable decafs? (11 msgs / 235 lines)
1) From: Jeff Holder
I'm new to the SM list group and am interested in knowing what kind of experience others have had roasting decafs. Are there any favorites? I'm getting ready to purchase the GeneCafe and since I must limit my caffine intake I'm looking for the best decaf. Depends on what yu like. Best thing to do is go to the decaf section and read them... Dan ---------

Jeff, Every decaf I've tried from Sweet Maria's is excellent. I really enjoyed the Ethiopian Sidamo in the past, as well as the Sumatran. You just need to pay attention to the write-up notes and listen for cracks. Bob in Denver.

I occasionally take one or another of SM's decafs to an afternon or evening get together as a hostess gift. They have all been well received. I thought the Nicaraguan Dipilito was very nice and also enjoyed the Guate. Huehue. Both were water processed. The FTO Nicaraguan Dipilito which is now offered may not be the same coffee as what I had, but you can't go wrong with any of them. Just remember that the already brown color of the decaf beans can fool you. Go more by smell and sound. Don't do lots at a time as it is not likely to improve with age. -- Paul Helbert Mid Atlantic Home Roaster's Gatheringhttp://paul.helbert.googlepages.com/midatlantichomeroaster'sgatheringHomeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

Jeff, Of the decaf beans that are up right now, I like the Sidamo as well. It blends nicely with the Sumatra, as well as with one called Kimodo blend, which comes up from time to time. Someone else on the list mentioned the Guatamalan Huehuetenango, which was also fantastic. I also like the Panama Carmen Estate and the Kenyan that just sold out. When looking at the bean reviews, in addition to checking the flavor profile, check out the body (light v. heavy) and the recommended roast levels (light v. medium v. dark), and favor the beans that fall within your tastes. Of course, don't be afraid to try new things. Every decaf I've tried from Sweet Maria's is excellent. I really enjoyed the Ethiopian Sidamo in the past, as well as the Sumatran. You just need to pay attention to the write-up notes and listen for cracks. Bob in Denver.

The Huehuetenango is great. But really, I just like saying the name. David

"The Huehuetenango is great. But really, I just like saying the name." But are you sure you're pronouncing it correctly? :) I'm pretty sure I'm not, but it makes it more fun to say.
