| I can't find any articles on this at the moment but in my experience and at least one co-worker-- retailers can charge to a virtual account number months after it was supposed to expire. To me that was the biggest part of the security features-- thieves would not be able to use my card if a database was hacked next month. I used a virtual number to open my son's iTunes account along with his gift card early last December. In February they were still charging the account maintenance fee but it has since stopped. My co-worker was told by his CC company that "if the expired virtual number is manually entered into a machine it can still be validated". Doesn't make much sense-- a virtual card certainly can't be swiped so how is a manual entering of a card number any different than a cyber purchase? I still use them but am disappointed that there may still be issues. On Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 6:22 AM, Seth Grandeau wrote: <Snip> -- -Kevin /* Never argue with an idiot. | I work for one of the largest CC processors. If an expired card is processed, it is ultimately the issuing bank's responsibility since they authorized the transaction. Any transaction that doesn't have a signature can be disputed. Not a valid contract. The process takes time & can bounce between merchant & customer a few times before a decision is reached. | My card is Discover, and I can generate a unique number for a dealer (e.g., a specific number that was generated for an Amazon purchase) and then continue to use that unique credit card number for Amazon. So, in the case of Discover anyway, additional charges can be made with that specific merchant. While it may be better for the unique number to die with each purchase, at least someone can't get the number I use for Amazon and charge a $4000 hotel bill in Rome. Also, I use a unique number for PayPal. I used Internet Explorer when I generated that number. Now, when I am using Firefox (actually, the USB version of Firefox) and try to pay via PayPal, the number is not accepted. I have to open Internet Explorer to make the payment. | PeterZ and Brian, Hope your digital thermometers are holding up! Mine bit the dust today! Damn, I had just dialed it in. I assume it is the probe. I wonder if the company will replace it? | Jim, I haven't used mine for anything other than knowing what time it is and what ambient temp is in my kitchen. I also bought a small thermometer that sticks on the outside of the window, so that you can see from indoors what the outside temp is. That seems to be working ok, though occasionally it switches itself from F to C scale. Let us know what happens with your attempts at getting your thermometer replaced. | Hi James, Somehow I misplaced all of the posts on this deal and I am happy that you spoke up again. As for me I bought three of them! So far I have use only one and it is a bit flaky. Randomly it will beep and reset itself. Like I do not even have to touch it and usually the time is incorrect on it and the degrees are set for Centigrade. I caught it doing this while I was using it, that is how I know, but it serves its purpose for me. I use it in my PGR above the bean mass, sort of to measure the air temperature coming out of the Turbo Oven. Also using a Kill-A-Watt, I have learned that I do not need to use 1500 watts to roast a pound. I use the 1500 to rise quickly to about 370F (Another digital TC within bean mass) and then cut back to at or near 1200 Watts to finish. This keeps the roast environmental temperature somewhere just below 500F, and allows more control of the time between first and second crack. Usually I need to cut the power altogether just after first crack and it will coast into second a few minutes later. As always, YMMV as we all have different roasters, place Thermo Couples differently, and roast in different roasting environments. I always roast out doors. Some days it is windy. Some days the temp outside is over 115 F in the shade. Sometimes I roast in the sun at 118F, and sometimes, like today, at 65F and windy! Guess I have to try the other two and see how they work, here in Lake Havasu City, AZ PeterZ james McDougal wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20 |
| Thanks, Brian. That is the company, but they no longer have the digital thermometer. I'm guessing that they buy seconds or other low quality goods. For only $9.95 (if I remember correctly), it's not worth worrying about if I can find an acceptable alternative. | Hi Peterz, Should be cooling off a little in LHC, no? So, you bought 3! Good to have lots of back-ups ;-). My "console" never acted up, nor did the probe for that matter until it gave up the ghost. I only got about 20 roasts from the probe. You might try your other "consoles" - bound to have a good one somewhere. Those thermometers are made in China and it seems like they have very poor quality control - but then maybe I'm expecting too much for $9.95. | O crud! You are right. Just because the other one read 20-30 degrees low, doesn't mean this one will! I screwed up! The symptom was the temperature reading raced too high to be believable ~380 by 2 min of roasting. All the other readings were HHH. Now at room temperature the reading goes to HHH after a few seconds. When I plug another SS probe in, it has a reading but is below ambient - I assume because the resistance is different.
