Topic: [Homeroast] Behmor cold fix-again (27 msgs / 483 lines)
1) From: Bernard
I got the fix message from Behmor too, along with the how-to pictures. They are just not clear enough to figure out. The area presumably is the recessed area where the fans are. On the right side there is a nut where the flat bladed screw driver is inserted and turned (?)........this is a question. It is impossible for me to get into or bend anything around the housing there and so I am back to square one with the adjustments I've learned to make. It would be nice to roast a half pound or a one pound on those settings respectively. Can anyone make the "fix" clearer to me? Right side of the sloped piece of tin. Tip of blade under little nut that holds the 40mm fan. insert, hold in place, twist clockwise GENTLY. You will see the right edge of the tin deflect down. Only open it up about 1/8 inch. Bernard, I can probably help. I will see about dropping you a line off list. Also, just a suggestion. I have seen now a few people noting how the photos and instructions are not clear. Has anyone bothered to tell Joe? Maybe ask for clarification? He can only improve it if he knows it is lacking. Y'know, it'd sure help if the photo showed someone actually sticking the screwdriver into the proper spot. I could barely see squat--not even with the flashlight held between my teeth. The blurry photo showed a red-circled area, with the screw and nut MUCH closer to the opening than is mine. John- It's the fact that Joe can get quite defensive that puts customers( folks out $300 USD) off. And, with all due respect, I understand that you and Joe have a business relationship, so no need for you to get defensive on Joe's behalf. It's common knowledge that these roaster are not perfect and some roast better than others. This list exists for people to share information, which 9 times out of 10, comes with an opinion attached to it.Taking a part your $300 Behmor and shoving a screwdriver in it and bending metal is way over the top for most folks like myself. I got Joe to send me a copy. Yes, I see it is a little less that clear. But I mean that literally. Just a little less than clear. Not a lot. OTOH, even with it a bit out of focus, there is only one thing the photos can be showing IMO. But I will admit, it is difficult for me to divest myself of my knowledge of the interior and workings of the Behmor so it may well be that to others it is not what they need. Sometimes it takes 15 tries, sometimes 1, bit I can't allow my lack of ability with a camera to get in my customers way. The fact that 1 person said something means it's probably a problem, the fact that 4 people had a problem means it's a bad problem. Perhaps those 4 people should contact support for the Behmor to get an in-focus picture. If the problem is bad enough, I guess those 4 can take their $300 that they would have spent on the roaster, save up an additional $700, and buy two gene cafes, or save up yet another $700 and buy two hottops so they can roast a lb of coffee at once. Or a heat gun and a dog bowl for much cheaper. And they can roast outside too where the smoke won't bother anyone. My opinion is, take it easy. It's a good price for what the unit does, the fix is an acceptable one rather than ship the unit back to the seller for repair (which is an option if you'd rather, just expect it to take a few weeks as you would with ANY thing you wanted to ship back to the seller). The problem exists in some, but not all roasters, just as you'd expect the first run of any product to not be perfect, so isn't this. $300 won't guarantee you a perfect hamburger, much less a perfect roaster ;) Agreed, the instructions should have included information like 'unplug roaster before making modifications'. It probably should also have said 'do not perform repairs while standing in front of a jet engine of a plane preparing for take off' or 'do not perform repairs in middle of busy intersection'. That's the world we live in, I guess. I cannot of course verify, but I'm willing to bet that Joe would take these roasters and repair them for anyone that wasn't comfortable making this fix themselves, but again, I won't speak for the man. I do agree with the point you made about this list being for the sharing of information. We definitely should keep it to that. -F On Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 2:51 PM, Ira wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

Ok, Bonnie, I did mine too, but I think I didn't bend it quite enough-- roasted 224 gm. Sumatra Org. Mandheling on the 1/2 lb. setting (P1,A) with the time maxed out, and barely made it through first crack, and this is a bean that's supposed to go to at least FC if not Vienna. (The metal surrounding the opening is exactly the same shade as in your photo). Is the camera looking UP from the bottom? Is the bend on the side closer to the center of the roaster? Or is it closer to the sidewall? On mine, I had to insert the screwdriver horizontally and then down to the right to get that bend--on yours it looks like you inserted it vertically UP through the hole. OK, I realize the perspective in your photo was considerably foreshortened (printed it out and took it over to the roaster). I checked my roast, and indeed I simply had not bent the metal enough compared to your photo--color looked like City-C+ and the bean munch tasted sort of baked. So I bent the metal a tad more till it looked like the photo and reloaded the underroasted beans into the drum and used the same setting, this time not adding any time. Nothing seemed to be happening until the readout read about "4:40," when it sounded like first crack had resumed and then there was a fusillade. With the door closed it sounded like a slightly louder version of second but like very rapid first with the door opened. I took no chances as I saw some smoke, and hit "cool." The crackling continued for at least 5 sec., so I cracked the door to hasten cooling. Beans looked a little darker but no oil, so I kept my fingers crossed. Once cooled, they looked bigger than they had before, tasted more "done" (tasted and crunched like FC-FC+) and there was a little new chaff left in the collector. So I did the same thing with that Costa Rica peaberry I'd underroasted last week (beans so hard it was difficult to crank the Zass Turkish and I actually had sore arm muscles the next day). Had about 3 oz. left, so set the roaster for 1/4 lb., no extra time added. And just as I predicted, heard a couple of loud snaps at 2:40 left and then the rapid-fire started, so I hit "cool" so it wouldn't coast for more than 10 sec. or so. So far, so good. About to do the other 1/2 lb. of Sumatra Mandheling (this half-pound will be Classic, not Organic, so I'll take it a tad lighter as it's recommended for FC, not FC+-Vienna). Hello Sandy, I turned the roaster so the back was in the front, so I could take off that cover. Then, I just aimed the camera straight in. It's too late for me tonight to look again, you too!, but maybe tomorrow I'll take some more photos. Oh- I just received your update, so I won't take any more photos. I'm glad things are looking better for you. For me, it's like using a brand new roaster. When you do the 1/2 lb Sumatra roast (instead of a re-roast), I hope you really see an improvement. Good luck, and good night!
