1) From: Jeff Holder
I've been noticing various comments from the lists about the Behmor but I am interested in knowing those of you who are using the Gene Cafe. Are you please with the roaster or are you having particular challenges with it. I am considering purchasing on in the next week. Thanks, Jeff Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

I am quite pleased with my roasters. I have two, one in Minneapolis and another in Shanghai (220v). I've roasted both indoors and outdoors so I have a appreciation how the climate affects the roast and cool down. The Shanghai one runs in a much warmer and more humid environment so I need to stop the roasts a bit sooner. The machines are sensitive to voltage fluctuation. More noticeable in the US than china. My voltage coming into my apartment is 220v with almost no fluctuation. The US voltage tends to fluctuate a couple of volts from 120v and I notice it in the charts. They are easy to operate. When I am away from one or the other, I let friends use it. They love it too and very happy with results. Programming is not an issue. I roast each bean a little differently. Differences is usually at the end of the roast. If I had a programmable, I'd be manually operating it during the last half. I would never leave it unattended either way. I sometimes wish it roasted a pound rather than half pound but it is not a deal killer for me. I make batches as gifts to others. Good luck on your decision making process. Morris

Morris and Steve, Thanks for your review. I actually have used the Hearthware I-Roast for the past couple of years. We've just returned to the states from West Africa and I had to leave my I-Roast there. Thought I might try to do a upgrade and wanted to make sure that others had a good experience with the Gene Cafe. I think I'll give it a try. Be sure to read Eddie Dove's review...http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dnwz3r2_148jp5pc5q3It was his review that convinced me to buy the Gene Cafe. I've done 65 roasts since the beginning of the year and have had great results. -Peter On Aug 21, 2008, at 7:18 PM, Jeff Holder wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

Love my GC If you decide to cool manually do make sure to place the empty drum back in the machine then run it through the cooling cycle. If you run the cool cycle without the drum in place the hot air will melt a part of the machine opposite the aluminum orifice. I live 30 minutes from Tim at Fresh Beans Inc and he repaired mine and explained what I was doing wrong. In this case, RTFM would have been the ounce of prevention :-) BTW: Tim doesn't answer emails, understandably, because home roasters tend to ask him to guide them through the roasting process. Jeff, When I started on this list I was doing research and enquired about the Gene Café myself. At the time I was using a Poppery II. I heard lots of positives. I eventually decided on the Behmor over the Gene Café for only two reasons: 1) the extra money I saved in buying a Behmor went toward buying more green beans 2) I liked the idea of being able to roast 1lb if and when I wanted to. I don't want to confuse your decision; I am basically saying that there are many strengths to the Gene Café and those that use = one swear by it. Even though I didn't buy one, for the reasons above, I still believe it would have been a very smart decision if I did. John H. Use mine every week since they came out with no problems! There *is* a slight learning curve right at first due to two things: * The cracks are harder to hear than with some other roasters. The Gene Cafe is quiet but the sound of the beans sliding / mixing is a *lot* like the sound of the cracks so it takes a few tries to distinguish the sounds. * There's the 'lag' from when you hit 'Cool' to when roasting actually stops. This happens with a lot of roasters so it's just something you have to learn for each new roaster. One tip: I like most coffees right around FC+ so I use a flashlight to watch the smoke column - when the smoke 'connects' to the chaff collector you're hitting second crack. I've used the Gene Cafe for about 18 months. It's an excellent roaster. To do a good roast, I count on hearing, sight and smell. The Gene Cafe is very quiet and first and second crack are easy to hear. I also use an IR2 and you have to pay keen attention to hear cracks (noisy machine). You could easily have a phone conversation while roasting next to the G.C. The visibility of the G.C. is also excellent. It's easy to see the stage of the roast through the glass drum. I vent outside with the GC but can smell the roast a bit despite venting. But, sight and sound are more important to me and with the GC the latter two are a breeze. I also love how you can change all settings of the roast "on the fly". Overall the G.C. is an excellent roaster and I would recommend it. But, as you may soon find, drum roasted coffees "taste" different than your IR2. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. Sometimes I'll go back to the IR2 because of the difference. IR2 seems to give a brighter coffee whereas the GC is more mellow. Phil

I have been using a Gene Cafe for about 6 months. Before that I used an I-Roast II for a couple of months. The Gene Cafe works very well for me. It does good roasts and gives me tools to experiment and learn. My roasts usually take 16-18 minutes (unless I forget tto empty the chaff holder. That roast took 7 minutes :-) The first crack is easy for me to hear. The second is more difficult. The heater element went out a couple of weeks ago. I called the distributor and he sent me another element right away. I put it in myself. I had to be careful but I wasn't over my head disassembling the unit. Support is part of the package when you buy a product and I am pleased with the Gene Cafe support. I am happy with my Gene Cafe and have no desire to upgrade or try another roaster. If I do move up it would be to a pro-style unit but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I always start my roast at 20 minutes, but they typically end 16.5 to 19 minutes on my Shanghai roaster. I finish off the rost at a bit lower temp when roasting lighter. I'll be running the Mpls roster in Oct to reacquaint myself to it. Morris

20) From: Derek Bradford
Just to chime in here with my thoughts... I used the GC for about a year in Korea. Although it did work relatively well, mine broke down once or twice and required replacement. It cools too slowly, as others have mentioned, and you will probably want to cool the beans externally. But for me, the biggest problem was the roast characteristics for espresso. I brew espresso almost exclusively, and compared with gas roasting, the flavors are flat and underdeveloped. In a blend like Liquid Amber there was never any caramel, and other beans were definitely lacking in flavors that are always present when I roast over gas. It's definitely a decent roaster, but depending on your tastes and experience with other roasters, you may find it lacking. It was for me, and is one of the reasons I sold mine. I would, however, buy one again if I saw one for a really good price; it's a nice thing to have lying around. --Derek -- Every path but your own is the path of fate. --Thoreau Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

I love my GeneCafe. It is by far my favorite toy in the house. The visibility and the control are fanastic, and I get great roasts. This morning I had Yemen Mokha Sanaani, and the flavor has been riding with me all day. I do it in the garage. I previously had an iRoast2. I didn't really like it. It was noisy and tempermental, and I think there was a problem with the heating unit. The top also cracked on me. I am glad I persisted with roasting and got the GeneCafe. I received a GeneCafe as a bonus from my boss last year and I have only one complaint: I didn't bring it with me to india! I'm on assignment in Bangalore for a year and suffering from a lack of good coffee. I think I'll be a tea drinker for the year. Back to the roaster :-) I've run about 30 pounds or so through it and haven't really started experimenting yet. I do like the FC+ I get out of it and the predictability. Being able to control the temperature directly has let me nail in on a profile someone posted and it gives me consistently great results. I couldn't be happier. Cheers, Bruce. Bruce, Thanks for your review on the GeneCafe. I made the original inquiry because I was considering purchasing one. I'd used the IR2 for a couple of years and was looking to upgrade. In light of the many helpful reviews I've purchased one this week. It should arrive just after labor day and I can't wait to give it a whirl. I would think you ought to be able to get some good green beans in Bangalore. What business carries you there? Though I've never lived there, I have a couple of friends who have. I have lived in Africa for the past 18 years and returned to the states at the end of last year. I was buying some local beans in West Africa but they weren't so great (poor grade robusta). I would often blend them with some from SM and it made for a decent cup. Thanks again for your review. Finding good coffee here has been a struggle so far. We haven't had a chance to do a serious search yet, too busy getting settled in the new house. I'm a software engineer with IronPort/Cisco. We have a team in Bangalore and we want to inculcate them with IronPort's development philosophy/culture/etc. For the last couple of years we've had one or two engineers over here continuously. As of today, we've been here for exactly three weeks (and what an adventure it was getting here). I'm in the process of setting up a blog of our adventures, there is a bare skeleton there now but in the next few days I'll start filling it out. It's athttp://www.otherother.com/blog.Cheers! Bruce.
