Topic: [Homeroast] Kauai coffee company: any good? (10 msgs / 208 lines)
1) From: Bill
Some friends came back from Hawaii and brought me a pound of greens from Kauai coffee company. Very kind of them! Isn't Kauai one of the big industrialized plantations? Anybody every roasted any of this stuff? Is it any good? Basically, I don't want to roast up a week's worth of coffee if I'm not gonna enjoy it. If it's so-so, what I would do is to roast the stuff, keep enough for 1 cup, then take the rest to the office... Any thoughts? bill in wyo Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

I brought a pound back from a trip a few years ago and was completely un-impressed. I think I roasted one batch, drank a couple of cups and composted the rest of the roasted stuff. The greens hung around the back of the stash until I was testing a new roaster at which point I used them with a pound of Tom's Ugh to figure out how it worked. I'd say you should probably try it, but you won't be satisfied. The plantation is just above sea level and is completely industrialized. Mechanical pickers, probably bunchs of fertilizers and such. It was interesting to visit, but the coffee (even the stuff they were providing as brewed samples) wasn't very good. My wife did get a nice t-shirt... Friends of ours live there. While we were visiting I bought some greens and tried theirs roasted. Like Demian I was unimpressed. Bill your friends obviously know you are serious about your coffee and were great to think of you and how you may enjoy the fresh beans. John H.

Thanks John and Demian. That's what I had remembered. Please don't think I was ungrateful. Wow, just to be given green beans is such a gift! I will roast them for the office pot. They brew a bad mr. coffee and I sometimes give them sub-par beans to use. Then on occasion I will brew some for everyone using some of Tom's beans. Thanks again. bill On Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 5:28 PM, John and Emma wrote: <Snip> Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

No it isn't any good. My daughter brought me back 5 pounds of greens. I have sent her 3 of them roasted, and struggled through a pound of it myself. I will roast the other pound and use it for filler or give it away. I love this list! Not only is there plenty of coffee experience here, but also helpful tips. I hadn't thought about roasting it darker, but that makes perfect. So yeah, this will be a nice FC+ office coffee. thanks again bill Homeroast mailing list Homeroasthttp://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20">http://lists.sweetmariascoffee.com/listinfo.cgi/homeroast-sweetmariascoffee.comHomeroast community pictures -upload yours!) :http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemIdx20

I visited the Kauai farm last summer. It is barely above sea level and obviously a mass production enterprise probably planted on old sugar cane fields. I tried the coffees they had for sampling and a couple of their medium roasts were ok, nothing special, but not awful either. Unfortunately, they seemed to be pushing a couple of flavored coffees I didn't try and some overroasted "espresso" that was almost undrinkable.
