I haven't seen any posts for the list - has everyone gone to sleep? Could be. Maybe everyone is recovering from over-exposure to extended family. Well, this is my first post to the list, so HELLO all you sleeping people. I've been roasting for about 5 months now. Started with a little hot air popcorn popper, bought a Z&D after it started getting cold here in Michigan, and went in on a Behmor with a friend just a few weeks ago. So, I've had a quick upgrade cycle on roasters. Looking forward to this list! A lot of folks are stranded out on the highways. A little rain, sleet or snow...throw in curves, hills, a little oil on the road and wall to wall traffic. Just got a call from my son who made 100 miles on I 81 in Virginia in about five hours. He hopes schools are called late in Asheville so the kids won't be late. I sent them off with two thermoses of extra strong Mandheling/Huehue blend, half French press and half Chemex. They found a motel near Roanoke. Hope they can get some sleep. I hope everyone had a good weekend. On Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 11:53 PM, Jim Russell wrote: <Snip> -- Paul Helbert The man who is always waving the flag usually waives what it stands for. -Laurence J. Thus far, along Chicago's lakefront, we've dodged a major meteorological bullet. The west and NW suburbs got as much as 8" of snow--we had rain that briefly turned to wet snow but melted instantly, and then the rain resumed. We'll probably get an inch or so (maybe 4" if the wind shifts and blows in off the lake--if that happens, IN and MI will probably get the brunt of that. Lake Shore Dr. turned slick early this morning, and the inevitable first pileup of the season ensued (the cause being "I forgot you CAN'T drive 55 in a 40 on an s-curve when it's 32 and it just started raining"). Took me 12 min. to drive the 5 miles to the traffic jam and 20 to get through it (three blocks long). All in all, could've been much worse (and was predicted to be so). Of course, the airports got slammed, since the East coast snow delayed scores of incoming flights (as well as the necessary planes and crews to fly out). Well, I spoke too soon. Went into the kitchen, loaded the dishwasher, cleaned the pans--et voila: we've gotten an inch of snow since I wrote the last post. Sigh. Hope the roads and streets are clear enough for me by late afternoon to make my rehearsal in the Loop by six p.m. And I was going to run errands tomorrow (including getting a new ergonomic shovel and going to the bank to have enough cash on hand for the snow-shoveling guy and a couple of bags of ice-melting salt). Welcome, Luis, welcome! Keep us posted on how your roasting goes. We like to hear about how others are doing. Where in Michigan are you? Grand Rapids here! Thanks John! Just yesterday Scott (a lurker) and I roasted some Sumatra Gr. 1, Brazil Daterra Farms, and the El Salvador CoE Finca Malacara. So, I'll be looking forward to the Brazil and El Salvador in a few days after they rest. I think I will brew up some of the Sumatra now. I had to go buy a new Chemex because my last one broke (and cut me up pretty bad). I've been thinking of getting one of the Beehouse pour overs, especially after all the posts! It seems like it would be very easy to clean up while I'm here in my lab. I'm a grad student at MSU, so I live out here in East Lansing (Haslett, actually). I have not made it out to Grand Rapids, but I hear there is a decent coffee scene over there, for Michigan anyway.
